Biologically Inspired Flight Techniques for Small and Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper discusses energy extraction from atmospheric turbulence by smalland microuninhabited aerial vehicles. A controller which superimposes a gust-dependent control input on a state-feedback derived control input is proposed, and a genetic algorithm is used to obtain control gains as well as the optimal nominal trim state is described. Control laws are designed for both vertical sinusoidal gust fields as well as vertical and longitudinal Dryden gust fields. The optimal trim state and controller gains are shown to vary with gust intensity, and simulation results show significant energy savings for the gust soaring controller over a feedback-only controller.

Antenna 3D pattern measurement can be a tedious and time consuming task even for antennas with manageable sizes inside anechoic chambers. Performing onsite measurements by scanning the whole 4π [sr] solid angle around the antenna under test (AUT) is more complicated. In this paper, with the aim of minimum duration of flight, a test scenario using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is proposed. A pr...

Insect flight studies have advanced our understanding of flight biomechanics and inspire micro-aerial vehicle (MAV) technologies. A challenge of centimeter or millimeter scale flight is that small forces are produced from relatively complex wing motions. We describe the design and fabrication of a millimeter-sized wing flapping mechanism to simultaneously control pitch and stroke of insect and ...
